Spell speeds
There are three spell speeds in total, each and every card has one. They're used to determine what cards can be used when, and if they can be chained to each other.
Each card type falls into these categories:
Spell speed 1: Normal spell cards, Continuous spell cards, flip/ignition and trigger monster effects, ritual spell cards, field spell cards and equip spell cards.
This means these cards can only be activated on your turn in your Main phase one, or Main Phase two. they can only be activated as chain link 1, and cannot be used during your opponents turn.
Inless they are triggered by an event. (ie monster gets flipped face-up by battle.)
Also, the only time spell speed 1 effects will ever chain, is if they activate simultaneously. for example, 2 sangans being sent to the graveyard at the same time would cause them to chain.
Spell speed 2: Quick-Play spell cards, Normal traps, Continous traps and Quick effects.
Quick-play spellcards cannot be used on the turn you set them, and may be used on your opponents turn.
These cards can be used in response to a spell speed 1 card, or another spell speed 2 card, they cannot be chained onto a spell speed 3 card as they're too slow.
Quick effects are monster effects like Light and darkness dragon which negates any card effect which comes into play whilst he is face up.
But, if your opponent was to activate a spell card such as fissure, then light and darness dragon was to negate it, then your opponent activates book of moon Light and darkness dragon would be unable to activate his ability, as it isn't a multi-trigger effect. so it can't be used more then once in the same chain.
Monsters with quick effects usually have the text "This card can be activated during either players turn" or something similar to that.
Spell speed 3: Counter trap cards.
These cards can be chained to anything as long as the conditions are met.
